Thisfilmisoneofmypersonalfavourites,althoughIdoubtmanypeoplewouldcallitaclassic.Ithasaveryluscious,stylishfeeltoitthatisn’tparticularlycommon.ThereissomethingveryFrenchaboutit-whiledepressinginonesense,itisverywarmandsatisfyinginanother.ThestoryisafairlyemptyoneaboutayounggirlturnedneophyteclubberontheoutskirtsofParis,butitisn’treallytryingtoconveyastorysomuchasafeeling.Themaincharacters-thepretty,upbeat,confusedlittlegirlandthefaintlyhopeless,depressed,drug-dependentboxerhaveveryuniquequalitiesthatcounteracteachotherinacompellingway,andthefilmultimatelydealswithsuchissuesasthepointlessnessoflife.Whatreallyelevatesthisfilm,though,isthesoundtrack.Eachtrackwascarefullyhandpicked,andthedream-likeclubscenesareasheerjoytowatch.AsthedirectorYolandeZaubermansaid(Ithink),thesoundtrackisoneofthemainactorsinthisfilm.AlthoughRobD’s’ClubbedToDeath’isthecentralpinnacle,therearemanyotherexquisiteofferingssuchasthemorecommercial’LeaveHome’bytheChemicalBrothers,orGavinBryars’shortorchestral’FarewellToPhilosophyBar’.Certaintrackssuchas’Rollin’&Scratchin’bythepop-statusDaftPunkwereinthefilmbutfailedtomakeittothedisc.Itisalsoworthnotingthatallofthetracksusedinthisfilmwereprettyobscureatthetime-DaftPunkdidn’tmaketheirbreakthroughuntilaboutayearlater.
